SHILOH FARMS Hazelnuts have a crunchy texture and an appealing flavor that pairs well with chocolate and coffee. A great snack right out of the bag, hazelnuts have long been a favorite in desserts and pastries. They are also welcome in savory dishes, giving a nutty lift to meats, seafoods, and vegetables.
As with most nuts, hazelnuts are a great source of protein, fiber, and heart-healthy monounsaturated fatty acids. They are also rich in manganese, Vitamin E, magnesium, and B Vitamins (especially Thiamine, Folate, and Vitamin B6).
To Toast: Spread hazelnuts in a single layer on a baking tray and roast at 350°, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes, or until the skins begin to break. While still warm, roll nuts up in a clean towel, then let them rest for 10 minutes. Gently rub hazelnuts back and forth to remove skins. Some bits of the skin may remain.
1. Substitute for chopped walnuts in recipes.
2. Make homemade hazelnut butter by processing in food processor until thick paste forms; season with salt and desired flavorings (might we suggest cocoa?)
3. Grind hazelnuts in small batches to make a flour, which can be added to cakes, breads, pastries, and other baked goods.
4. Add chopped hazelnuts to cookies, nut brittles, and candies; sprinkle over salads or roasted vegetables.
Storage: To maximize shelf life, we recommend storing nuts in the refrigerator or freezer.
