A wonder food around for over 5000 years, SHILOH FARMS Organic Brown Flax Seeds blend a myriad of health benefits with a pleasant, nutty crunch!
It has been suggested that flax seeds aid in everything from promoting healthy hair and skin to reducing bone loss and helping prevent cancer. While the jury may still be out on some of these claims, what is definitely true is that flax seeds are a great part of a healthy diet! A rich source of Omega-3 essential fatty acids (also found in fish and thought to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and high blood pressure), flax seeds are high in protein, fiber, iron and B Vitamins as well. They also contain more lignans, fiber-like compounds with antioxidant properties, than any other plant-based food.
While flax seeds can certainly be consumed whole, unless they are thoroughly chewed and broken apart, they will pass through you undigested, robbing you of their many nutritional benefits. Grinding flax seed is a great way to ensure complete digestion and creates new opportunities to incorporate flax into your everyday diet. To grind, simply put the seeds in a blender or coffee grinder for a few seconds, then add to baked goods, sauces, smoothies, or any number of other recipes for a nutritious boost. Consider grinding the flax seed in small amounts to be eaten immediately, since ground flax can quickly become rancid (due to the oil in the seed). ¼ cup whole flax seed will equal approximately ½ cup ground.
When consuming flax seed, it is important to stay properly hydrated, otherwise it can cause intestinal discomfort. To prevent this, it is recommended that no more than 2 tablespoons of raw seed or 3 tablespoons of ground seed should be taken at one time.
Suggestions:
1. Raw, whole flax seeds add crunch to salads, cereals, or yogurt.
2. Sprinkle whole flax seeds atop homemade breads, crackers, or cookies.
3. Add a little ground flax to batters for breads, muffins, and other baked goods.
4. Stir a few tablespoons of ground flax seed into breading for fish or chicken.
5. Mix ground flax into oatmeal, yogurt, milkshakes, or smoothies.
6. Ground flax can be used as a thickening agent in gravies and dressings.
Tip: When adding ground flax, reduce the amount of regular oil called for in each recipe to compensate for its high oil content.
Storage: Flax seeds are best kept in a jar or sealed container in the refrigerator or freezer. If grinding flax, we recommend only processing the amount needed, as its high oil content can cause ground flax to quickly turn rancid. Ground flax should be stored in the freezer until ready to use.
